This project, funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, focuses on the work done by inmates of the workhouse. Although much of the work was unskilled, some people were taught crafts which they could then use to get work outside. Included in this category was basket-making.
We have linked up with the museum at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse for this project as we are working in the nearest town, East Dereham with 2 groups of people learning the zarzo basket. We are visiting the museum with the groups as part of the project.
Gressenhall inmates didn’t learn basketry, but there is an important collection of baskets used in agriculture and the home in the museum today. Visit the blog to see the project unfold week by week.
